Winter Ale from Smuttynose Brewing Company

By Don

So, I sat down to write some new reviews and found my notes from this one.  I drank this back in the middle of the winter, but forgot to post the review!  Here's what my notes said...

Winter Ale from Smuttynose Brewing Company of Portsmouth, NH has an interesting name and makes some interesting beers as well.  The name comes from Smuttynose Island, the third largest of the nine islands that comprise the Isles of Shoals, a small, rocky archipelago that lies seven miles off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. (At least, that's what their website says!)

Winter Ale is (of course) a seasonal brew available from late October through February.

It pours to a dark, creamy, rich appearance with a minimal head and some good lacing.  There are strong caramel and toffee hints in the aroma.  The taste is sweet with a bitter kick of hops at the end.  It has decent carbonation and gives you a feeling that it's coating the inside of your mouth.

Like most winter warmers or winter ales, Winter Ale gives you a warming feeling inside.

So, now that it's too late this year for your to find this one (probably).  Enjoy a Smuttynose Winter Ale NEXT winter!

Cheers!
