Dunkel Heffen-Weissbier from Franziskaner Brewery

By Rick

Where did October go?!

It's a great transition month of weather, clothes- and food/ drink! We turn our attention to heartier flavors- and Franziskaner's Dunkel Heffen-Weissbier fits the season! Check out their very interesting website at www.franziskaner.com to learn more about this brewery! (You'll even learn how to properly pour a wheat beer!)

Franziskaner is the oldest privately-owned brewery brewery in Munich, Germany- dating back to 1363! There's a very interesting timeline on their website. (Consider that the Reinheitsgebot- the German Purity Law of 1516-declared that beer must be made from only barley, hops and water!)

Dunkel Heffe-Weissbier literally translated is "dark yeast white beer."  Sometimes you might see the German term "weizzen" instead, but Bavarian wheat beers tend to use weiss. (Wheat has the same etymological root as white.)

Because of the darker Munich malt- this wheat beer pours a beautiful caramel-brown color with a creamy brown head. (Have you mastered the proper pour yet?!) I can detect the aromas of hearty malt meshing with the sweetness of the wheat. This 5% ABV brew is very well balanced in terms of its effervescence, fullness and finish! You can confidently pair this beer with hearty foods of your choice- or just enjoy by itself!

Don't let another month go by without trying a Franziskaner Dunkel Heffe-Weissbier!

Cheers! (Prost!)
